Where is the Response?

So there is a new movie out - Call and Response - musicians are getting together to tell the world about slavery and that we need to stop it.

What's missing: how to do it.

I will admit I have not seen the movie. But what I have encountered is very much in the vein of the One Campaign and "We are the World" from the 80's. Let's not get serious and do anything to really end slavery - let's just talk about it, talk to a prostituted woman, and write a song about how we would feel and then get 138 musicians together to sing about ending slavery.

Give me a break.

And this ad demonstrates it perfectly!

So Congress has never discussed this law (I think, or is it a statue, or a bill?) that condones (we assume) slavery in the US.

I realize they want to keep it short, but there are several problems here. First off they don't tell you what laws they're referring too nor do they really let you know what has not been discussed. They mention demand but don't dive in deeper into what that means, so this one committee has never discussed whatever it is that has never been discussed, but they never say why it's that committee's role to discuss it... and then the biggest problem...

"Congress have never discussed this" -- end of scene!

What's missing: SO GET OFF YOUR DUFF AND GO TO OUR WEBSITE AND CALL YOUR SENATOR/REPRESENTATIVE AND TELL THEM TO DISCUSS THIS ISSUE! AND DON'T STOP UNTIL THEY COME OUT WITH LEGISLATION WITH THE FOLLOWING THREE THINGS ADDRESSING HOW WE CAN ENFORCE THE CURRENT ANTI-SLAVERY LAWS ALREADY ON THE RULE BOOKS IN THE US.

The one question that comes up in everything I have encountered regarding this film is: where is the response? They never tell you how you can do anything. They just seemed floored to discover trafficking happens (and they wouldn't care if the woman they bought wasn't 10 - but we'll save that for later) and think if people sing about it and say some stats that's enough.

I'm glad another missed opportunity has come from those in the spotlight to actually do something productive...
